I haven't smoked for over 21 years. I know the time-line, because that is when my son was born, 21 years ago. I had good reason to quit.
I wasn't a casual smoker, the kind that only smokes when they drink, or can go for days without. No, I have that addictive personality type, and I had my smokes regardless.
I was outside on those cold winter days, because I had to have my smoke. Dedicated to the cause, but what cause was it?
Then I found out I was pregnant. After the initial shock I started looking at my health care regimen, and realized that if I were to quit smoking I would never have a better reason to quit.
That is how I kicked the habit.
I had good reason, something or someone that I cared for, and I was willing to quit just for that reason. Sure, for guys the whole pregnancy thing doesn't work, and I don't recommend it for every woman either. The idea is to find value in something, and then you can create purpose.
We have opportunity in this world to find a better way, a stronger self, and a higher purpose. There is a great draw to stay the same, to wallow and whine, and to be another face in the crowd. Find value in who you are, especially in that part of you that feels that need. As you give to yourself and fill that void, the exterior needs will discipate.
